Forum: feature_films Subject: Sci Fi & Schlock Fi Wish List - PD?

"The Mighty Gorga" (1969, hilariously awful gorilla suit)
"World Without End" (1956, almost unknown gem, good color production)
"Missile to the Moon" (1958, remake of "Cat-Women of the Moon")
"Flight to Mars" (1951, Monogram bet the farm on this color production)
"Project Moonbase" (1953, incredibly un-PC story by Robert Heinlein)
"The Madmen of Mandoras" (1963, Hitler's head in a jar)
"The Cape Canaveral Monsters" (1960, Phil Tucker strikes again)
"The Yesterday Machine" (1963, baton twirlers & Nazi scientists deep in the heart of TX)
"Beginning of the End" (1957, it's the grasshoppers' turn)
"Frankenstein vs. the Spacemonster" (sic) (1965, indescribable)

Thanks guys!

I'm pretty sure "Madmen Of Mandoras" and "Frankenstein Meets The Space Monster" are not PD because I was going to put them up. As far as the others go, I don't think it's likely but if any of them are ok then I'll see what I can do, as I have everything on the list except "Cape Canaveral Monsters", which is one I haven't had the pleasure to see yet. Maybe I'll look on Amazon for that one.

Of that list, I don't believe any are PD.

Sorry, "Cape Canaveral Monsters" was renewed. Can't put it up here. Would have liked to see it.

It's a pretty fun, sick and twisted sci-fi film. Actually rather imaginative at times. I have a crappy copy on DVD-R myself.

The only movies I couldn't find a renewal for are The Mighty Gorga (1969), Project Moonbase (1953), The Yesterday Machine (1960), and Frankenstein Meets the Spacemonster (1965). There is a claim on a version of The Mighty Gorga, and Wade Williams has some kind of claim on Project Moonbase (1953). Those two need further checking.

Work reared its ugly head, and as a result I've been absent for six days. This has left me a bit confused (a fairly normal condition). Which of these films are PD? Are any of them PD?

Thanks again.

From what I gather here, The Yesterday Machine is the only one that is definitely PD (or is it?). I bought the DVD of it off Amazon (manufactured by Televista) awhile back, and the quality is so bad it's damn near unwatchable. Caveat emptor.

Thanks. I have seen a reasonably good copy of this lovable turkey on DVD, but don't remember who issued it. If I can find out who it was, I'll post the info here.

It's definitely a very strange film! I first saw it on VHS from a rental store around 1980, and a friend and I sat there in stunned silence with our jaws on the floor. I'd never seen anything quite so...different...before! lol

Baton twirlers; the world's worse torch song; Nazis in a hole in the ground trying to resurrect Hitler: Texas. This one has it all! It definitely ranks high on my whacko movie list. Would make a perfect double feature with "Madmen of Mandoras."

Sounds completely irresistible.

btw, I noticed in billbarstad's post above that an alternate title of Madmen from Mandoras is "Twisted Brain", which was also the alternate title of another Crown Int'l classic from the 70's, Horror High. It used to air in the wee hours about once a month back in the late 70's/early 80's.

This Twisted Brain is a Jekyll and Hyde tale of a high school nerd who goes after his various tormentors after ingesting a monsterizing potion he brewed up in chemistry class. In the ensuing carnage, a mean teacher is decapitated with a paper-cutter, a sadistic janitor gets dissolved in an acid bath, and so on. All of it delivered up with great low budget energy and enthusiasm.

It would be great if Horror high/Twisted Brain were PD, but I'm not holding my breath.

Horror High (1974) had its copyright renewed.

IMDb had this review/comment posted in 2006 about a new release of the film, set for release in 2008. Amazon says it'll be available Aug. 10, 2010.

Horror High was stolen from the filmmakers thru a device know as a "Hollywood" contract. As the star and one of the filmmakers, I would very much like to see Mark Tensor in court. Horror High Ltd. has not seen one penny from Crown International and it's ring of crooks, and the connection to Rhino (a subsidy of Warners) is ridiculous as well. Crown and Rhino have no rights what so ever to this film or other films in the Horrible Horrors 1 & 2 collections. I urge you to wait for the new transfer that is being made from the directors cut off of the original 1st answer print from the original a/b roll neg. There will be extras and interviews, commentary, and an in-depth statement about Crown International and Mark Tensor's Hollywood thievery and a visit from Veron (after drinking the potion) to Mark Tensor's lair . - Pat Cardi AKA Vernon Potts

What a backstory...I had no idea. I've long associated Crown International with the kind of inversely great schlock that was a staple of that bygone era of movies-till-dawn programming (Nightmare in Wax, Blood of Dracula's Castle, ah, so many memories!).

How disappointing, but I know that sort of unscrupulous maneuvering is par for the course. It's really a shame. I'll definitely be looking for that Pat Cardi-endorsed director's cut when its released. I haven't seen the film in at least 25 years.

And a lot of cross-pollination of cast and crew from the films of Larry Buchanan! Yep, it's a hoot.
